Although originally a social anthropologist, I have developed a strong interest in the history of the late 19th century. Much of my work has centred on two individuals: William Morris – designer, writer and socialist; and John de Morgan – professional agitator, dime novel writer and tax receiver. In pursuing their stories, however, I have developed a more general enthusiasm for the radicals and scoundrels, as well as the forgotten causes and movements, of that period, much of which has been lost in the footnotes of history. This blog is dedicated to them, and their successes and failures.
